Trumph apparently had a lot to tweet about this morning. Apparently he woke up in a mood, and decided to let the American People know several things, one of which was:
I would be willing to “shut down” government if the Democrats do not give us the votes for Border Security, which includes the Wall! Must get rid of Lottery, Catch & Release etc. and finally go to system of Immigration based on MERIT! We need great people coming into our Country!
Trump has mentioned the shutdown threat before, and he may be getting antsy since the midterms may not work out very well for the Republicans. Of course, a government shutdown may not help the Republicans in the midterms, and certainly the party doesn't seem to think that a shutdown would help them in the midterms.
Now there is a sort of "boy who cried wolf" sense on this, seeing as he has threatened this before. Still, since he is the POTUS, it can't be completely ignored. But it seems unlikely that the Republicans are willing to have that kind of a fight before the elections. Of course, it could just be bombast to bring attention to the matter, his "art of the deal." His tactics however don't seem to have very much subtlety to them.
I'd say the odds of a shutdown actually happening are in the neighborhood of 20%. Not very likely, but certainly not impossible. The odds of Trump getting the wall funded are much lower, maybe 5%.. I suspect that this particular story isn't going to have much in the way of legs for now, but it is an ongoing on, and I'm sure we'll hear more about the wall and immigration in general from Trump soon.
