Trump Watch 20180706

Today's Episode:  War!  Trade War!

Well, it may not be a full scale war, yet.  And Trump is on record saying that Trade Wars are easy to win.  Trump's position is that current trade arrangements are very unfair to the United States, so this is a step in the negotiation of better trade deals.  His presentation though is to make it a matter of "winners" and "losers" which seems to be the way he views negotiations in general, at least at the outset.  Another problem also seems to be that there is no clear strategy or end game here for the trade war.  No specifics, or for that matter, no broad strokes.  It seems likely that Trump would want to stay on fairly good terms with China, particularly since they are important in helping to apply pressure to North Korea.  Most analysis seems to say that the current tariffs are targeted, and overall not a really big problem, but since there is no road map, the question is whether there is an end in sight.

Speaking of North Korea, Mike Pompeo is on his second day of meetings in Pyongyang discussing how to manage the "nitty-gritty" details of managing and verifying North Korean denuclearization.  Pompeo is sticking with the premise that the goal is "complete denuclearization," while Kim Yong Chol has avoided that term, saying that he wants to clarify some things.
