Today's Episode: Or What?
So, the ruling is in, and while it's not clear if this can be appealed, at this point it has been ruled that the government can not hold minors for longer than twenty days, and they had to reunited children with parents by the 10th of July.
It is clear that deadline will not be met. What isn't clear is just what happens to those officials responsible for meeting said deadline. Now this isn't a problem that is isolated to government situations. From what I can tell, courts have pretty weak powers when it comes to coercing fictional entities, particularly when it comes to governments, and to a lesser degree corporations. Corporations can be fined, even forced into bankruptcy, and the same can happen to local government entities, but when it comes to Federal Government entities, I'm not clear what a court can do in this sort of situation. Maybe appoint some sort of oversight? But even then, if the actual people involved choose not to comply with the court's rulings, the most the court could do is hold some individuals in contempt, a scenario that seems to be quite rare. We'll see how this one plays out, but I rather suspect that there will be no repercussions to those that fail to meet the court's required actions.
